The bearer of bad news

Talked to Coach Dickenman this morning, and Shemik is done for the season with his concussion/facial fracture. I talked to him at the women's game last night and his face looked like he'd just been in a UFC event, but he sounded like he wasn't in too much pain. He should be as good as new come next season.

The surprise to me was the David Simmons is also out, also having sustained a concussion. His came Sunday when he attempted to cut off a dunk at Sacred Heart. He got stitches, but apparently took a pretty good whack in the head as well.

All other Blue Devils should be present and accounted for, which was enough to win on Sunday, so who knows. We'll have TONS of coverage leading up to this game, starting in Wednesday's paper and a full preview that you can take down to the game with you on Thursday in the paper on Thursday morning.

Back to "work."

  1. Its a real shame what happened to Shemiek. Funny how he was called for a foul on that play ;) Sounds like he's a real fighter and will be back next year! Rest up.

As for Simmons, it was probably a bad idea to put him out there in a blowout win. I know the new injury is unrealted to the shoulder, but what were we really expecting from him after the long layoff? He's going to be a very good player for us at CCSU, but injuries happen and we should have just waited for next year before he saw the court.

Now I wonder if it would have made more sense to have Baskerville play in the Spring semester? He would have lost a full year of eligibility, but we would of had another inside presence for most of the NEC regular season and this tourney run.

2 quickies: 1) I can't really connect the injuries for Simmons. This one wasn't due to the other, sounds like he just got hit as he got dunked on. It was worth a shot to see if he could help if the docs said he was ok to go. If he had ripped his shoulder again, you'd have a better case.
    2) I absolutely would not have brought in Baskerville this year. You'd waste a year of his eligibility to play in just a few games, and he'd be just learning the system so he'd be like a November freshman and not a March one. More importantly you'd be taking minutes away from Marcus, who has grown considerably in recent weeks, which would hurt him for next season. Bringing in Baskerville, unless there had been a new injury besides Dave (to a big, Shemik's doesn't factor in here) wouldn't have helped anyone in my humble opinion.
